IPE
Europe · EN 10365 (IPE / HE)
IPE sections are European hot-rolled I-beams with parallel flanges and a narrow, deep profile - the continental equivalent of the Universal Beam. They are used primarily as flexural members where major-axis bending governs.
The parallel (non-tapered) flanges simplify connections and bolting compared with older taper-flange beams. For column duty or balanced stiffness, the wide-flange HE series (HEA/HEB) is used instead.
Reading the size: An IPE is named by nominal depth in millimetres: "IPE300" is 300 mm deep. Mass per metre is fixed for each size by the standard.
Properties are indicative - verify against the governing standard before professional use.

Frequently asked
- What is an IPE section?
- IPE is a European (EN 10365) hot-rolled I-beam with parallel flanges and a deep, narrow profile, used mainly for bending. It is the European counterpart to the Universal Beam.
- What is the difference between IPE and HEA/HEB?
- IPE sections are deep and narrow, optimised for bending. HEA and HEB are wide-flange H-sections (width approximately equal to depth) suited to columns and heavily loaded members.
- How do I read an IPE size?
- The number is the nominal depth in millimetres: IPE300 is 300 mm deep. Each size has a fixed mass per metre defined by EN 10365.
