Frequently asked
- What is in a steel section property table?
- For each rolled size: its dimensions (depth, flange width, web and flange thickness), cross-sectional area, second moment of area (Iₓ), and the elastic (Zₓ) and plastic (Sₓ) section moduli about the major axis - the values needed for strength and stiffness checks.
- What is the difference between elastic (Zₓ) and plastic (Sₓ) section modulus?
- The elastic modulus Zₓ governs the moment at first yield of the extreme fibre; the plastic modulus Sₓ governs the fully plastic moment when the whole section has yielded. Sₓ is always larger than Zₓ, and modern codes use Sₓ for the bending capacity of compact sections.
- What does "indicative" mean on these pages?
- Property values are compiled from published standards and are accurate for reference, but are flagged indicative pending an engineer cross-check - verify against the governing standard before relying on them professionally.
