HEB

Europe · EN 10365 (IPE / HE)

HEB sections are European wide-flange H-sections with flange width roughly equal to depth, the standard (heavier) HE series. Thicker flanges and webs give high capacity and balanced stiffness, making HEB a common choice for columns and heavily loaded members.

At the same nominal size HEB carries more load than the lighter HEA; where the design is governed by capacity rather than weight, HEB is the usual default of the two.

Reading the size: An HEB is named by nominal depth in millimetres: "HEB300" is around 300 mm in nominal size. Mass per metre is fixed for each size by the standard.

Properties are indicative - verify against the governing standard before professional use.

Frequently asked

What is an HEB section?
HEB is a European (EN 10365) wide-flange H-section with width about equal to depth, the standard HE series. Its thick flanges and web suit columns and high-capacity members.
When should I use HEB instead of HEA?
Use HEB when capacity governs: at the same nominal size it has thicker flanges and web than HEA, so more strength and stiffness, at the cost of extra weight.
How do I read an HEB size?
The number is the nominal size in millimetres: HEB300 is the 300 series. Each size has a fixed mass per metre defined by EN 10365.
