HEA

Europe · EN 10365 (IPE / HE)

HEA sections are European wide-flange H-sections with flange width roughly equal to depth (up to 300 mm), the lighter of the HE series. The near-square proportion gives balanced stiffness, so HEAs serve as columns and as stiff, stable beams.

Compared with the heavier HEB series at the same nominal size, HEA has thinner flanges and web and so less mass and capacity - a lighter option where the loads allow.

Reading the size: An HEA is named by nominal depth in millimetres: "HEA300" is around 300 mm in nominal size. Mass per metre is fixed for each size by the standard.

Properties are indicative - verify against the governing standard before professional use.

Frequently asked

What is an HEA section?
HEA is a European (EN 10365) wide-flange H-section with width about equal to depth, the lighter of the HE series. It is used for columns and for beams needing good lateral stability.
What is the difference between HEA and HEB?
At the same nominal size, HEB has thicker flanges and web than HEA, so HEB is heavier and stronger. HEA is the lighter choice where capacity allows.
How do I read an HEA size?
The number is the nominal size in millimetres: HEA300 is the 300 series. Each size has a fixed mass per metre defined by EN 10365.
